Obituary of Herman E. Deckard
Heltonville – Herman E. Deckard, 95, of Heltonville, passed away at 5:23 am on Sunday, February 21, 2021 at I.U. Health Bloomington Hospital.
Born September 12, 1925, in Bedford, he was the son of Curtis and Goldie (Adams) Deckard. He married Thelma Lively on July 3, 1948 and she survives. He attended the Needmore High School. He was very patriotic and loved America. He joined the U.S. Army serving during WW II. He become involved in the stone industry at the age of 22 and continued until he fully retired at age 83.
Herman loved to travel, camp, and spend winters in Florida, however, his best times were spent with his family. He was a man of deep faith, attending Donica Church of God for thirty-five years. He currently worshipped at the Free Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife of 72 years, Thelma, of Heltonville; three children, Sherry Muller (John), Richard Deckard (Debbie), and Roger Deckard (Donna); a son-in-law, Barry Norman; grandchildren, Lauri Dukes, Kerry Dodds (Mark), Stacy Whalen (David), Leah Beardslee, Stacey Moore (Chris), Lyna Anderson (Jay), Kelly Martindale (Scott), Kyle Norman, Eric Holtsclaw, Brad Branham (Diana), and Shad Deckard; great-grandchildren, Kenny Niflis (Ashley), Cody George (Alli), Clayton George (Kaylee), Wyatt Deckard, Cassidy Hazel (Mason), Dillon Eagen (Kennedy), Alaina Sergent (Gabe), Pharyne Gremore (Corey), Ruthie Dodds, Shepherd Dodds, Dallas Dukes, III, Dalton Dukes, Drake Dukes, Chyanne Prince (Jordan), Hunter Branham, Gavin Branham, Lauren Anderson, Ellie Anderson, Alex Adams (Ashli), Hope Beardslee, Olivia Beardslee, Nick Norman, Cooper Branham, Kelcey Scheidler (Nick), and Shelby Fields; great-great grandchildren, Emberlee and Hallee Hazel, Axel George, Aiden Sergent, Colton Ridge, Haedyn and Harley Prince, Vivienne Scheidler, Zelie and Jonas Gremore, Braylan Dukes, Abe, Archie, and Ada Adams. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Ansel, Howard, and Harvey Deckard; a daughter, Patricia Norman; two great-grandsons (in infancy).
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 am on Friday, February 26th at the Free Methodist Church with Steven Deckard officiating. Burial will follow in Hanson Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Thursday, February 25th at the Day & Carter Mortuary. In accordance with CDC guidelines, masks and social distancing are required.
