John,
Sorry to hear of your Dad's passing. I will remember him as a judge who projected his authority in the court and with counsel but was fair and considerate when called for. He was also a fierce advocate for his clients as I experienced several times while mediating his cases.
My condolences to you and your family.

John and family—my sympathy for you loss. Liked and respected your dad as judge and colleague. Let me share 2 Judge Plummer anecdotes. 1. John Haury was defending an armed robbery case in Circuit court. I was holding his briefcase. For some reason, we had subpoenaed Dr. Benito Odulio, who, being a doctor, ignored the subpoena. When Haury informed the court of that, your dad said, “we will be in recess.” Got up. Went into his chambers and called sheriff, ordering them to go to doc’s office in Mitchell, arrest him, cuff him,put him back of squad car and haul him to court. (I got this from court reporter). When doc appears in scrubs and cuffs, Dad proceeds to rip him a new one. On the record. #2. Before there were CHINS, kids were adjudged “dependent and neglected “. Late, great Ruel Steele is representing the then Welfare Department. I am with Legal Services representing parents. Case worker testifying. Steele, in his gravelly voice, asks “So is this child dependent and neglected under the law of the State of Indiana?” I object. Class for legal conclusion. SUSTAINED. Steele says “But, your honor, I always ask that question.” Dad says, “Nobody ever objected before.”

John was such a nice neighbor! My dog and I loved greeting him as he was out with Hershey and Falcon. I am so sorry to his family. I lost a parent myself last year and this world is a very different place without a parent / grandparent. I wish you peace and comfort during this difficult time!

In the late 1950's the Woods family moved into the old two-story house on the corner of 12th and M streets in Bedford, just two doors down from where John lived with his mom, grandmother, sister Carol and little brother, Bill who was my age. Bill and I had good times together growing up. But one of my few memories of John was that while he could be deadly serious on occasion, he also had an infectious grin that was warm and inviting. Kid brothers and their friends can be exceptionally annoying to older siblings, and no doubt Bill and I probably annoyed older brother John. But in my few encounters, I never remembered him being rough or impatient with us. Rather, his good nature and ready laugh gave me a comforting sense of well-being. Even at that young age, I somehow knew John was destined for greatness at whatever he would do in this world. I never had a big brother, but if I did, I would have wanted him to be just like John Plummer.

I can’t believe Johnny’s gone. From age 8 we grew up together. He was unique. Highly intelligent, sometimes impulsive he could discuss history as well as whether Juan Marichal was a better pitcher than Bob Gibson. Goodby Sandy John. I know Booc was there to greet you. See you soon. Fred
