Obituary of Mary J. McDowell

Springville Mary J. McDowell, 84, of Springville, went peacefully to be with her Lord on Wednesday, July 8, 2009 with family by her side at Dunn Memorial Hospital. Born April 15, 1925, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Cornie and Tressie (Swango) Kirkman. Mary was a founding member of Calvary Chapel Church at 1201 O Street in Bedford where she taught Sunday School for many years. She was a devoted wife, loving mother and grandmother. Survivors include her children, Judy Sipes and husband, Larry of Mitchell, Jim McDowell and wife, Karen of Bedford, Gaye Ann Stewart and husband, Rick of Bedford, Jon McDowell and wife, Kathy of Springville; sister, Mona Gale Turner and husband, Frank of Oolitic; brother, Jim Kirkman and wife, Mary of Mitchell; ten grandchildren; six great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Opal to whom she would have been married 68 years on July 12th; a sister, Barbara; a brother, Jack and a grandson, Justin McDowell. Funeral Information Funeral services for Mary will be conducted at 1:00 pm on Saturday, July 11th at the Calvary Chapel Church with Pastor Jim McDowell officiating. Burial will follow in the Hilltop Cemetery in Avoca. Friends may call from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Friday, July 10th at the Day & Carter Mortuary and from 11:00 am until the hour of service on Saturday, July 11th at the Calvary Chapel Church.
