Miss Mary was a Beautiful Woman Inside and Out. I have known her for 46 years as Her Daughter In- Law Traci’s best friend. Our children played together and visited Miss Mary alot. She lived a Happy and Healthy Long life. She will be missed by many. RIP Cathy, Steven, Bryan Hirzel

Mary was a spunky little gal. I worked with Mary at Sterling Drug Store at the soda fountain when I was in high school. She taught me so much, not just how to make sodas but how to deal with people. Loved her!

July 1970, Carroll C. Morrison took the opportunity to relocate his five year old retail business to 1507 J street, the former location of Sterling Drugs. At that time I was seventeen and preparing (not too seriously) for my senior year at BHS. It was that summer that I met Mary Elkins and Lorraine (if I remember correctly) “Willie” Williams. They both worked for John Jeskewich, pharmacist and proprietor of Sterling Drug Store. Mary and Willie managed the snack bar and front end of the store consisting of magazines and hallmark cards allowing my parents to focus on their retail business which occupied the remaining area. Mary and Willie were both energetic, extroverted ladies with pleasant personalities to greet the public. Their contribution to the success of Morrison’s Business Supply and Travel Goods did not go unnoticed. The couple knew every customer by name and together created a welcoming atmosphere for the entire store. Willie, an avid Pacers fan, retired sometime later and high school students were subsequently added to assist Mary with the counter. Lynn Wyatt and Tanya Banks were two such students who worked alongside Mary for several years. Mary, of course, was an excellent role model for the girls and consequently made for a lively and entertaining environment. As Tanya and Lynn left for college, young ladies including Carla Jeskewich, Elaine Robinson Rile, Jamie Holmes and Marge Briscoe also worked the counter with Mary. MBS&TG was sold in May of ‘85 and the store was moved to another location on the north side of 15th Street, in the 1000 block. Mary continued employment at the new location under the new owner until the store closed shortly after. Mary Elkins was a bright light to all she met and certainly to those she served at the counter of Sterling Drug Store and Morrison’s Business Supply and Travel Goods. Needless to say, my parents, my siblings and their children, my wife and I as well as my children, were all very fond of Mary and her family. Please accept our sincere condolences. Jed H. Aunt Mary always had a warm smile, a hug, and a friendly greeting for me. She was much loved by my family. When I was younger, we always went to Mary and Chet’s for Christmas Day. Preston, Greg, and Vicky - I have so many happy memories of your Mom. I told her one day she was the “rock” of the Prow family. She will be so missed!
