Obituary of Violet Louise Cummings
Violet Louise Cummings, 95, went home to be with her Savior, Jesus Christ, at 12:30 am on Monday, August 9, 2021.
She was born to William Everett and Susie (Weyer) Stevens on October 18, 1925, in Lawrence County. She married Harold Cummings on June 18, 1943, and he preceded her in death on October 8, 1962.
Violet was a vibrant and active member of Englewood Baptist Church throughout her life. Her faith was the central theme of her life and was demonstrated through her relentless joy, trust in God’s provision, perseverance through adversity, and love for those around her. Despite the challenges of being widowed with 3 young boys at age 36, undergoing brain tumor surgery in her late 40s, and surviving a stroke at age 73, she remained faithful to God and used those situations as an opportunity to share His love and care with others.
To support her family and be home with her boys during their childhood, she opened a home bakery, later going on to become a nurse’s aide at Dunn hospital and finally working as an assembler at Ford Visteon before retiring to enjoy her young grandchildren. She is still remembered by many for the beautiful special occasion cakes she baked for community members and organizations.
She is survived by her three sons: Ronald (Sherry) Cummings of Avon, Bruce (Teresa) Cummings of Bedford, and Michael (Courtney) Cummings of Plainfield; granddaughters Heather (Daren) Wade, Laura Cummings, and Anna Cummings; great-grandson, Liam Wade; sister-in-law Suella Stevens; and several beloved nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, four brothers - Ralph (Betty), James (Mary), Paul, and Johnny, and other siblings in infancy (Fred, Margaret, Anna, and Charles).
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 pm on Friday, August 13, at the Day & Carter Mortuary in Bedford. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 am on Saturday, August 14, in the Elmwood Chapel at Day & Carter with Pastors Stephen Carter and David Ferry officiating, with visitation from 10-11 prior to the service. Burial will follow in Cresthaven Memory Gardens. In lieu of flowers, friends and family may make donations to the Englewood Baptist Church Baptistry Project in her memory.
