Obituary of Jack Dean Cummings

Bedford – Jack Dean Cummings, 91, of Bedford passed away Thursday, September 24, 2020 at his residence. Born July 19, 1929 in Lawrence Co., he was the son of Olin “Jack” and Josephine (Samuelson) Cummings. He married Mary Rose Johnson on March 11, 1949 at the First Church of God in Bedford, by Pastor Melvin Miller, and she survives. He was a graduate of the Oolitic High School with the class of 1947 where he played basketball. Later he was a basketball referee and baseball umpire for thirty-four years. He was a buyer at General Motors for thirty-four years. He was awarded the General Motors Award for Excellence in Community Activities. He served two terms as the Lawrence County Auditor and was a member of the Lawrence County Council and Republican Precinct Committeeman in Shawswick 15A for several years. He was currently on the Dunn Hospital Foundation Board. He was a life-long member of the First Church of God where he taught Sunday School and Faith-N-Action. His family was his life. He loved and enjoyed greatly the kids’ basketball, baseball and racing. He will be remembered for always being the life of the party. He always gave 100 % and will be missed by all. Survivors include his wife, of 71 years, Mary Rose, of Bedford; two sons, Mike Cummings (Kathy) of Shoals and Terry Cummings, of Bedford; grandchildren, Brad Cummings (Carol), Jamie Cummings (Lori), Matt Cummings (Becky), Angela Garland (Clayton), all of Bedford; great grandchildren, Brailey Imhoff (Paul), Zakry Cummings, Larissa Cummings, Lilyann and Loralie Cummings, Morgan Cummings (Katie), Lexie Hudelson (Mark), Chase Cummings, Mason Cummings, and Kyston Garland; step-grandchildren, Wendy Hall, of Salem, Melissa Fletcher, of Bedford, and Robert “Bub” Cummings (Amanda), of Bedford; 8 step-great grandchildren; 4 great-great grandchildren; a brother, John Cummings, of Bedford; brothers-in-law, Kenny Johnson, of WA, Jim Johnson (Wilma), of AZ, Jackie Johnson (Becky), of FL; sisters-in-law, Vera Quackenbush (Don) and Marilyn Johnson, of Bedford, Barbara Johnson, of WA, Janie Hunter (mother of grandsons), of Heltonville; several nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Juanita Crabb; in-laws, John and May Newkirk, Benny and Russell Johnson and Ann Cummings. Cremation was chosen. No services are scheduled.
