Obituary of Kenneth Haws

Bedford – Kenneth Haws, 90, of Bedford, died at 7:15 pm on Sunday, January 20, 2019.

Born May 17, 1928 in Lawrence Co., he was the son of Joseph Elliott and Martha (Ingle) Haws. He married Carolyn Ann Fields in May 1952 and she preceded him in death in February 1971. He later married Erma (Chenault) Dalton in December 1975 and she survives. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving as a forward observer during the Korean War. After serving four years, he was honorably discharged as a Sergeant First Class. He was the owner operator of Kenny’s Tractor Sales, a Case dealership, for 20 years servicing all of Lawrence County and surrounding counties. He then began farming full time. From 1996 to 2001 he became an advisor, sounding board, landscaper and friend to Eagle Point Golf Resort during the rebuilding process at that time. He was known to all as Papaw. An avid gardener, he was well known for the numerous Elephant Ear plants in his yard. Living near the Bedford Post Office, he shared his love of tropical plants with everyone.

Survivors include his wife, Erma, of Bedford; two daughters, Susan Brennan and husband, Charles Hostetter, of Brownsburg and Melanie Hacker, of Bedford; a step-daughter, Cindy Turner and husband, Kent, of Bedford; six grandchildren, Jason Turner, Christy Toll, Samantha Renner and husband, Matt, Nicholas Hacker, Jobie Hacker, and Carolyn Hacker; five great grandchildren, Alex and Abbi Turner, Emerson Toll, Kaysin Hacker, and Everett Renner. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, a grandson, Brandon Runkle, and siblings, William Haws, Geraldine Padgett and Jim Haws.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 am on Thursday, January 24th in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with Johnny Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in the Leatherwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Wednesday, January 23rd at the Day & Carter Mortuary. The family asks that friends consider memorial contributions be made to the Lawrence County Cancer Patient Services. On May 4, 2019 beginning at 1:00 pm, please come by his home and accept a part of his legacy by taking and maintaining an elephant ear, some flower seeds or bulbs to enjoy and remember him at your home.  Family and friends may express condolences at www.daycarter.com.
