Obituary of Joseph Walter Parkes

Oolitic– Joseph Walter Parkes, 96, died at 8:30 am Saturday, September 1st at White River Lodge in Bedford.

Born October 25, 1921 in Seymour, Texas, he was the son of Bert Lee Parkes and Ruth Charlotte (Collins) Parkes. He married Naomi May Hamilton on July 26, 1943 and she survives. He retired as an electrician for Indiana Steel & Engineering Corp. He was a member of the Owensburg Baptist Church.  He loved the outdoors, hunting, and fishing, playing cards with his friends, I.U. Basketball, woodworking, and was very involved with his church.

Survivors include his wife, Naomi; four sons, Larry Joe (Bonnie) Parkes, William (Debra) Parkes, Kerry Dale (Kim) Parkes and Keith Duane (Marilyn) Parkes; eight grandchildren, Donnie Joe Parkes, Katrina Lynn Parkes Runge, Darren Scott Parkes, William Robert Parkes, Valerie Janine Parkes Byers, Shannon Marie Parkes, Jarret Michael Parkes, Kara Ann Parkes; several great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Florence (Paul) Lester and Nellie Ann Wilcoxen; one brother, Donald Leroy (Ellen) Parkes.

He was preceded by his parents; seven brothers, William Jarrette Parkes, James Lee Parkes, Stanley Elwood Parkes, Robert Anco Parkes, Charles Franklin Parkes, Bert Lee Parkes Jr. and John Edward Parkes; one sister, Susan Belle Parkes in infancy; one brother-in-law Ronnie Wilcoxen.

Funeral services will be conducted 2:00pm Wednesday, September 5th   in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with Bro. Marty Speer officiating. Burial will follow in Owensburg Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10:00 am until the hour of service on Wednesday.
