Ret, and Girls Sorry for your loss, it was a honor to have worked with Garold at the Hatchery. He had a wealth of knowledge about the Hatchery and mechanics, and didn't mind to share it. He will indeed be missed.

So sorry for the Soonmore family's loss. You are in our thoughts and prayers. I feel so blessed to have had Garold as my "boss" for a couple of months when I first came to the Division of Fish and Game in the fall of 1967. I helped Garold drain hatchery ponds at several sites in SW Indiana, we renovated a lake, and we did some fish sampling together. That was my first acquaintance with this wonderful and talented man who was admired by all the biologists that learned the practical side of fish management from him. He was a great teacher and remained a valuable resource throughout his long career with the division. But most of all I will miss his soft voice and his sweet smile. Garold, you are a great example of what a man should be. God Bless you.

Ret and the girls,
Sorry for your loss. My prayers are with you and the family. May god lay his hand on you in this time of need.
I remember when I came to visit about 3o years ago and my dad (Jack) pulled up to your house but I thought we were at the governors mansion to find out it was where you lived at the hatchery.
Take care and God bless.
Love you all,
LaDonna in California

To the Spoonmore family- It was truly an honor to call Garold a co-worker, a fellow conservationist and a friend. My great thanks to the family for sharing him with us. His character, work ethic, insight and willingness to mentor so many of us, made us better people. We're all better off to have shared some of our precious time with Garold. Something's probably broken up in heaven, and God needed his special touch to fix it.
God bless

It is with great sadness that another great legend of the Div. of Fish & Wildlife has left us. Garold was always great to work with when the Avoca Hatchery needed some reconstruction and always had an easier and better fix for the problem. He was the go to guy for hatchery repair. If one hears what seems to be thunder, it will probably be Gerald taking out his frustrations by removing dents from a loader bucket with a sledge. He was probably called home to help keep Frank Lockhard (former Div. Director) in line.
God's Speed Garald!!!

To Garolds' family,
I am very sorry for your loss. Garold was a jewel. I was lucky enough to have worked with Garold while he was still employed by the DNR. And I am glad that I was able to work with him because he had such a great wealth of knowledge about just about anything. He was always willing to help and always seemed to have a answer for just about any problem I ran into. And you could always count on Garold for a great story from his tour of duty with the state of Indiana. He was a great man with great character!

Love and miss you so much papaw. Him and my grandma were everything to me growing up. He showed me what a father is suppose to be like. He was always there for me and helped shape me into the person I am today. I will forever have fond memories growing up at the fish hatchery. I spent ninety percent of my time with my grandma and grandpa. When I was a little girl I would help him feed the fish. I would go with him and my grandma to other hatcheries to make deliveries. If he ever caught a baby turtle he would bring it back to me for me to keep. He would also catch me tadepoles to raise. He always had a place for my cats that I loved. He even managed me through high school and my teenage years until he gave me away at my wedding at 18 and I moved away. I’m thankful a few years ago I was able to get him and grandma down here to Thunder Over Louisville where we had a table at Kingfish, which was his favorite place to eat where the joy on his face was unforgettable. Thank you papaw for always being there and taking care of me and giving me so many wonderful memories!

I have so many great memories of Garold. I started my career with the DNR at Avoca Fish Hatchery in 1986 and worked with him until he retired. There wasn't a piece of equipment that he couldn't fix, even if he had to improvise to do it. He had every imaginable nut, bolt, clamp, etc. known to man. He never threw anything away if he thought it had, or might have some value, some day.
There are very few people that I know who had spent as many years as Garold doing what he loved. And even when he retired, he didn't go far from the property!
I hate that I won't be able to be there to pay my respects properly as I will be on my way out west, but I know there will be lots of people there that will be evidence of the way he lived his life and touched others.
Aretta, I am very sorry for your loss and would like to give you a virtual hug - ((*)).
