Obituary of Florence E. Kaye Green
Florence E. (Kurczewski) Kaye Green
Florence was born in Hobart, Indiana on March 11, 1925 to Stanley and Emily (Hecht) Kurczewski. She was the sixth of eight children; her siblings were Helen Kurczewski, Dorothy Green, Alvina Smith, Ed Kurczewski, Stanley Kurczewski, Eleanor Breen, and Lucy Beach. She was preceded in death by her parents and by her siblings.
Florence graduated from Lew Wallace High School in Gary, Indiana and worked for US Steel before moving to Chicago. While living there, she attended classes at Loyola University, worked for IBM and Shell Oil and also became a lifelong Cubs fan.
After the birth of her daughter, Florence moved to Michigan City, Indiana where she became a bookkeeper for Boyd Phelps Inc. She worked there for over 20 years and retired in 1975. Florence was a Girl Scout Leader, room mom, and community volunteer during this time.
In June 1974, Florence married William Green and became a wicked pinochle player with a regular group of friends. She and Bill moved to Durham, NC in May 1977. Florence worked in the pharmacy of Durham Regional Hospital for several years before leaving to pursue her many interests. Florence loved her family, gardening, reading, bowling, baking, sewing, fishing, and ceramics. She also loved music, especially Big Band, Dixieland jazz, opera and musicals. Florence was also very active in the Eden Lakes Community Club and the Wise Owls Bowling League.
Florence and Bill moved to Bedford, Indiana in December 2011. She passed away on May 27, 2012 at the age of 87. Florence is survived by her husband, Bill (Bedford, IN), her daughter and son-in-law, Florrie (Kaye) and Tim Kelly (Springfield, VA), and her grandsons, Ryan Kelly (Newport News, VA) and Patrick Kelly. She is also survived by numerous nephews and nieces including Bill and Sue Green (Bedford, IN), Barb Koby (Merrillville, IN), and Cindy and Tim Taylor (St. Augustine, FL).
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be sent in Florences name to the Durham County Public Library Foundation ( http://durhamlibraryfoundation.org/giving.html ) or to the Museum of Life and Science in Durham ( http://www.ncmls.org/get-involved/donate-and-support ) which will help support two of her favorite interests.
