Obituary of Mary K. Grafton

Scottsburg Mary K. Grafton, 91, a resident of the Hampton Oaks Nursing Home in Scottsburg, IN, formerly of Indianapolis and the Popcorn Community in Lawrence Co. passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 15, 2006 following a brief illness. Born December 30, 1914 in Bedford, IN, she was the daughter of John Owen and Ruth (Kindred) Roberts. She married Roger Grafton on August 11, 1933 in the First Presbyterian Church in Bedford. They moved to Popcorn to start married life, clearing the land and building a log cabin from the trees felled by hand to begin a life as the pioneers would have lived with neither running water nor electricity. She was a graduate of the Bedford High School at age 16 in the class of 1930. She was a wonderful mother and a bookkeeper/accountant for Grafton Supply & Bikeshop and Dues INDIANA, Inc. in Bedford, businesses she and her husband, Roger partnered in. Mary was a member of the First Presbyterian Church as a child and later was a member and deaconess at the Popcorn Christian Church. She was a 4-H leader for 15 years with the Perry Pals Club. In Indianapolis, she was known as The Iris Lady. She had a garden with over 600 varieties of Iris and hundreds of Hostas and Daylilies. She was a breeder of English Bulldogs. She and her husband collected and restored antiques. Survivors include her children, Marthanne Grafton McDowell and her husband, Bill McDowell of Indianapolis; Sue Grafton Humphrey and her husband, Ron Humphrey of Kentland, IN; Margaret Grafton Ellison and her husband, Joseph Ellison of Houston, TX; Robert Grafton and his wife, Carole Grafton of Cincinnati, OH; Merrilou Grafton Luse and her husband, Jon Luse of Scottsburg, IN; Grand children, Kathy McDowell Johnson and her husband, John Johnson; Sherri McDowell Kolarich and her husband, Bob Kolarich; Debbie McDowell all of Indianapolis; David Humphrey of Kentland, IN; LuAnn Humphrey of Indianapolis; Steve Humphrey and his wife, Norma of Logansport; Mike Humphrey and his wife, Robin of Lafayette; Lisa Ellison Smith, Marc Ellison and Shana Ellison all of Austin, TX; Brian Grafton and his wife, Suzanne, Melissa Grafton Quinn and her husband, Chris all Cincinnati, OH; Sally Luse James of Scottsburg; Chriss Luse and his wife, Bonnie of Greenville, IN; Sarah Luse Holt and her husband, Drew of Largo, FL; Polly Luse Hamilton and her husband, Chris of Vincennes, IN; Cyle Luse and his wife, Tara of Jeffersonville, IN. Mary was blessed with 27 great grandchildren and 4 great great grandchildren. Funeral Information Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 pm on Saturday, November 18th from the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary. Burial will follow in the Lowder Cemetery. Friends may call from 10:00 am until the hour of service on Saturday at the Day & Carter Mortuary.
