Sorry to hear about Beverly. He was an impressive thinker and the only person I knew who would install an automatic transmission when he needed it rather than buy a new car.

Mr. Davis was a special person. He could weld anything. He did some special welding for us that I didn't know where else to get it done. Years ago, he gave my daughter, Julia, a ride in his helicopter. We thought that was very special. Sorry for your loss.

Mr. Davis was a true genius at welding and numerous other trades. I used to describe him to others as a "modern day Benjamin Franklin." My contacts with him were merely having some work done at his shop from time to time. He was such a talented and kind person. A visit with Mr. Davis always resulted in a learning experience for me and I always enjoyed talking with him. What a great man has passed.

To B's children and extended family:
My sympathies are with you all. I still have strong memories of the happy times I spent with Beverly and Muriel and LaRue and the family; at Christmas and Thanksgiving, and other times. Once, B took us to some of his favorite morel mushroom hunting spots, and we found a specimen as big as two fisted hands pressed together! I still have never seen another mushroom that big! It was delicious!
And there were the family dinners at Christmas and Thanksgiving, expeditions into the backwoods to search for antique glass telephone insulators, good times in the machine shop (I had been a toolmaker's apprentice, so of course I was fascinated by the giant lathe and other equipment); and, of course, flights in the helicopter! B once landed it right across the street from the apartment building LaRue and I shared in Bloomington, causing quite a stir in the neighborhood!
LaRue's parents met my parents only once, when both families came to visit LaRue and me at LaRue's pink Eisenhower-era house trailer in Bloomington. Now, my father is gone, although my mother is still in good health, for which I am grateful. But now, with both of your parents gone, you are probably feeling a level of sorrow I cannot pretend to understand.
The last time I saw B was some years after LaRue and I had chosen separate paths in life. I was back in Indiana for an extended visit; and I wanted to visit Indiana University in Bloomington, where LaRue and I first met in college. I invited my grandmother along for the drive, since we had not had a lot of time to spend together since I moved to California; and on a whim, I called the Davis home to see if they would mind us stopping by for a visit. Even though LaRue and I were no longer together, Beverly and Muriel welcomed us warmly, as though we were still members of the family! Muriel was confined to her big chair in the living room, because of the stroke, but she could still talk; and she got along so well with my grandmother, and my grandmother with her, who had never met each other; that you would have thought they were childhood friends!
B was always very nice to me, and I mourn his passing. I know that some of his choices in his final years, when his physical and mental faculties were failing, caused pain to you; and I am sorry for that. As the pain of these days begin to fade, I pray that you remember only the good times; and celebrate the life of a unique, one-of-kind, individual; whose like we will not see again.
R.I.P., Beverly Burton "B" Davis
