Obituary of Juanita M. Anderson

Bedford Juanita M. Anderson, 88, of 1417 Linwood Dr., Bedford, died at 9:44 am on Wednesday, September 21, 2005 at the Bedford Regional Medical Center. Born in Lawrence County on March 14, 1917 she was the daughter of Tollie Garland and Lola May (Brown) Ray. She joined Peerless Baptist Church in 1936. She married Frank Russell Anderson who died in 1973. She had one brother, Wayne James Ray, who died in 1987. After graduating from Heltonville, Juanita went to Central Normal College for two years to qualify for a teaching license. She later finished her degree work earning a BS in education in 1959 and an MS in 1963, both at Indiana University. From 1936 until 1942 Mrs. Anderson taught at the old Dive School north of Bedford. Her students were third and fourth graders in the four-room school. There sometimes were 50 students in a classroom. After WW II she taught at Heltonville. In 1967 Mrs. Anderson left regular classroom at Heltonville and become the traveling art teacher for Heltonville, Shawswick, Tunnelton and Englewood, teaching grades 1-6 at all schools and high school level classes at Heltonville, Shawswick and Tunnelton. She loved teaching children drawing, painting, and ceramics. In 1971 and until 1982 she taught fifth and sixth grades at Shawswick. Having taught three generations, she retired in 1982. She loved teaching all subjects and especially art, history and geography. Juanita loved to travel. Her first trip to California was in 1921. That trip took six weeks in a Model T Ford. She traveled in many of the United States, including Alaska and Hawaii. She also traveled in Australia and Russia. Outside the classroom, Mrs. Anderson was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, Eastern Star, Altrussa, Womens Department Club, NEA-ISTA, AARP, IU Varsity Club, and Indiana Retired Teachers. Juanita designed and made stained glass projects, cross-stitching, and ceramics. She was an avid sports fan. She especially liked to watch Bobby Knight coach and Damon Bailey play basketball. Juanita is survived by several cousins. Among them are Laverne White of Indianapolis, Alice Berryman of West Covina, California and Robert Dale Kinser of Eugene, Oregon. Her nieces are Betty Ritchison and Anna Blackwell. Her nephews are Gene and Paul Anderson. Her best friend for many years, Mary Gabbard of Bedford. Funeral Information Services will be conducted at 10:00 am on Saturday, September 24th from the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with Pastor Jon Lineback officiating. Burial will follow in Cresthaven Memory Gardens. Friends may call from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Friday, September 23rd and from 9:00 am until the hour of service on Saturday, September 24th at the Day & Carter Mortuary.
