Obituary of Helen M. Woodward
Bedford Helen M. Woodward, 85, of Bedford, died at 1:55 am on Sunday, January 3, 2010 at Westview Manor Nursing Home in Bedford.
Born September 2, 1924 in Lawrence Co., she was the daughter of Earl and Verna (Barriger) Southern. She married Jesse T. Woodward on June 9, 1942 and he preceded her in death on June 22, 1983. She was a homemaker and had worked various jobs; the last at the Hoosier National Forest Service. She was a graduate of the Needmore High School with the class of 1942. She was a member of the Dive Christian Church and V.F.W. Post #1686 of Oolitic. She was a musician. She loved to play the piano and sing karaoke. She also enjoyed painting, crafts and sewing.
Survivors include two daughters, Karen Gugin and husband, Clifford, Beverly Grogan and husband, Dennis, one son, Greg Woodward and wife, Doris all of Bedford; three grandchildren, Bill Hicks, Carrie Russell and Robby Woodward; eleven great-grandchildren; one brother, Larry Phemister and wife, Joanne of Heltonville; one sister, Marla Rae; one brother-in-law, Burl Woodward and wife, Lena of Bedford; her best friend and companion, Hanford Prince and family of Bedford. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, three grandchildren, Tom Gugin, Kathy Jean Gugin and Laura Gugin Winters; three sisters, Marjorie Hayes, Ruth Pat Jackson and Jackie Eaves; two brothers, Morris Southern and Bob Phemister. Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 pm on Wednesday, January 6th in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with Johnny Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Pleasant Christian Cemetery. Friends may call from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Tuesday, January 5th and from 11:00 am until the hour of service on Wednesday, January 6th at the Day & Carter Mortuary.
