Obituary of Hobert Dewey Thompson

Springville Hobert Dewey Thompson, 88, of 511 Spencer Pike Road, Springville, died at 6:20 pm on Wednesday, February 4, 2009 at the Stonebridge Health Campus in Bedford. Born August 24, 1920 in Wayne Co., KY, he was the son of Rathaniel and Vangie (Neely) Thompson. He married Nova J. Taylor on August 26, 1942 and she survives. He retired from RCA in 1975 and was a veteran of WW II serving with the U.S. Army in the Pacific Theatre. Hobert was a member of the Free Methodist Church in Bedford. He was a past president of the Springville Cemetery Board and a past director of R.E.M.C. for twenty-five years. He was Hoosier Energy director, a Boy Scout leader and Perry Township Trustee in 1965-66 and 1974-1981. He served on the board of directors for the Springville Feeder Auction Association, the North Lawrence Water Corporation Board and Lawrence County Cattlemens Association Board. He served on the Perry Township Advisory Board during the building of the Springville School and was one of the organizers of the Perry Township Volunteer Fire Department. Survivors include his wife, Nova of Springville; one son, Ronald E. Thompson and his wife, Phyllis; two daughters, Marilyn Gayle Kimmel and her husband, Ben, and Carolyn Martin all of Springville; grandsons, Scott Thompson of SC, Kevin Thompson of Springville, Darren Kimmel of Seymour, S. Sgt. Travis Kimmel of Ft. Benning, GA and Jared Martin of Springville; two step-grandsons, Chad and Nathan Martin both of Spencer; great grandchildren, Cole Kimmel and Allison Thompson; step great grandchildren, Drew, Reagan and Alexandria Martin, Laura Gayle Girdler and Alexa Anselmo; three brothers, Dallas Thompson of Bloomington, Charles Thompson of Switz City and Don Thompson of Loogootee; three sisters, Pauline Coursey, Martha Phillips and Jeana Bosell all of Springville. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Delmar Thompson in 2008 and Roy Thompson in 1965, Freddie and Junior Paul Thompson (both in infancy) and a son-in-law, Bobby Martin in 2000. Funeral Information Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 am on Saturday, February 7th from the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with Pastor Ronnie McLain and Rev. Richard Tallman officiating. Burial will follow in the Springville West Cemetery. Military rites will be accorded at the graveside by members of Gillen Post #33 American Legion.
