Obituary of Charles Dwayne Sterling

Bedford Charles Dwayne Sterling, 63, of 1032 24th Street, Bedford, died at 2:43 pm on Saturday, January 20, 2007 at the Bloomington Hospital in Bloomington, IN. Born July 14, 1943 in Oakdale, LA, he was the son of Davis and Martha Lena Sterling. He married Bertha Hackett and she survives. Charles lived in LaGrange, IL where he worked at Chase Manufacturing for twelve years. Following that he and his family relocated to Bedford, IN where he became gainfully employed with Carpenter Bus Corp. in Mitchell, IN. He later was employed at Imco Recycling, Inc. and retired from there in 2001. On September 15, 2001, Charles (Chuck) and Bertha followed a family vision and opened up what is known as Chucks Soulfood Restaurant. Through their dedication and commitment, the business became the first African American business in Bedford, IN. Chuck and Bertha took pride in sharing their gift of cooking. They took cooking for his customers as an honor and looked forward to opening up at the beginning of each week. Charles leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife of 27 years, Bertha Sterling and two daughters, Janice Nickeo and her husband, Patrick aka Mahi and Johanna Williams; one son, Tracy Gist; one granddaughter, Patshawna Nickeo; one mother-in-law, Sallie Hackett; one brother-in-law, Roy Hackett and his wife, Beverly all of Bedford, IN; two sisters, Joyce Rutledge of Joliet, IL and Orelia Mobley of Bolingbrook, IL; two brothers, Gerald Sterling and his wife, Cindy of Lake Charles, LA, Davis Joseph Sterling, Jr. of Virginia; four aunts, Nola, Agnes, Allie and Genieve of Lake Charles, LA; four uncles, Adam, John, Elliott and August of Lake Charles, LA; fifteen nieces and nephews; twenty-one great nieces and nephews and twenty-nine great great nieces and nephews and a host of reletives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Wilda Morgan. Funeral Information Funeral services will be conducted at 6:00 pm on Wednesday, January 24th from the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with Pastor Donald Griffin, Sr. officiating. Friends may call from 1:00 pm until the hour of service on Wednesday, January 24th at the Day & Carter Mortuary. A wake service will be conducted from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon on Friday, January 26th at the Corbin Colonial Funeral Chapel, 1001 Madison Street, Maywood, IL.
