Obituary of Charles E. Smith
Bedford Charles E. Smith, 83, of 2709 Illinois Street, Bedford, died at 2:05 pm on Tuesday, July 1, 2003 at Dunn Memorial Hospital.
Born June 15, 1920 in Lawrence County, he was the son of Roy and Esther (Turner) Smith. He married Mary Anderson on May 25, 1941 and she survives. He was retired as vice president in charge of operations for the Admiral Corporation, formerly the Trav-ler Corp. and Hoffman Electronic Corp. in Orleans, IN, Des Plaines, IL, New Albany, IN, Buffalo, NY, Sheffield, AL. He was a member of Englewood Baptist Church where he had been a Sunday School teacher for many years.
In 1953-54 he did much of the hands on building of the church. He arranged to have the communion table, the pulpit podium and the flower stands for the church custom made to match the interior of the church which he donated. He purchased equipment so that music could be heard from the bell tower. He was a member of the Otis Park Golf Assoc., a former member of the Bedford Chamber of Commerce, Junior Achievement Program and several local business and professional organizations.
Surviving with his wife, Mary, are one daughter, Peggy Reuter and her husband, Lyle of Bedford; one granddaughter, Julie Norris and her husband, James of Bedford; one great grandson, Kyle Ollis of Bedford; one sister, Mary Kimmel of Bedford. He was preceded in death by his parents, step-father, George Lockenour and one brother, Vance W. Lockenour. Funeral Information
Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 am on Thursday, July 3rd at the Englewood Baptist Church with Pastor David Ferry officiating. Entombment will follow in Cresthaven Memory Gardens. Friends may call from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm on Wednesday, July 2nd at the Day & Carter Mortuary and from 9:30 am until the hour of service on Thursday at the Englewood Baptist Church. Pallbearers are James Norris, John Lockenour, Scott Lockenour, Joe Kimmel, Dwight Kimmel and Charlie Bob Bartley.
