Obituary of Gladys G. Sargent

Gladys G. Sargent Gladys G. Sargent, 96, of 3100 S. Shawnee Drive, passed away at 10:04 A.M. Saturday, May 10th at Dunn Memorial Hospital. Born December 7, 1911 in Martin County, IN, she was the daughter of Willard George and Addie (Shoemaker) George. She graduated from Owensburg High School in 1929, attended Central Normal College in Danville, IN and then finished her degree at Indiana University. She taught school for a total of 36 years starting at Inman, Kentucky Ridge, Edington in Green County, East Oolitic and then 25 years at Needmore Elementary where she retired. After retirement she traveled throughout the United States, Europe, Australia and Canada. She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association, Altrusa, Womens Dept. Club and an active member of the Avoca Baptist Church where she had taught Sunday school, was in the grandmothers club, quilting club and day circle. A devoted mother, grandmother and great grandmother, she is survived by three daughters: Carolyn Susie Nikirk and her husband, Ronnie of Oolitic; Gerogeann Briscoe and her husband, Bill of Bedford; Brenda Chambers and her husband, Ben of Bloomington; 5 grandchildren: Steve Briscoe and his wife, Terry of Bedford, Bryan Nikirk and his wife, Jill of Fishers, Brad Nikirk and his wife, Julie of Brownsburg, Alayna Gray and her husband, Walt of Bloomington and Eric Chambers and his wife, Missy of Needmore; 12 great-grandchildren: Tristin, Matthew, Lauren, Katie, Adam, Hanah, Breanna, Bryce, Joshua, Paige, Macy and Logan; a special sister-in-law: Jo George of Bedford and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her former husband: George Sargent and four brothers: Opal, Ray, Lester and Louie George. Our family would like to thank the staff of StoneBridge Health Campus for their loving and excellent care of our mother. Funeral Information Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, May 14th from the Elmwood Chapel of Day & Carter Mortuary with Rev. Kyle Witmer officiating. Friends may call at Day & Carter Mortuary on Tuesday, May 13th from 4:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. and on Wednesday, May 14th from Noon until the service hour.
