Obituary of Garrel E. Robbins

Family and friends mark the passing of Garrel E. Robbins on August 31, 2007. He was born January 11, 1917 in Bedford to Homer H. Robbins and Blanche L. (Hawk) Robbins. A 1935 graduate of Bedford High School, he worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps during the depression at an Idaho camp. He returned to Bedford to join the Postal Service and to marry Martha Jane Stevens on September 15, 1940. World War II took him to the Pacific Theater with the Navy SeaBees. At the end of the war he returned to Bedford where he built his home, started his family, and resumed work at the Bedford Post Office, where in over 46 years of service he rose to be an accountant. A member of the American Legion Gillen Post #33 for over 60 years he was also an Elk and a past Lions Club member. Garrel was a Deacon with the First Christian Church and was Scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop #35. He enjoyed touring Indiana, seeing the U.S. and gardening. Surviving with his wife, Martha Jane of Bedford, is son Steven R. Robbins of Bedford and daughter Rebecca A. Robbins-Jessee of Williams; a granddaughter, Anna Robbins of Orleans, brother, Victor Robbins of Indianapolis and sister, Lorene M. Jewell of Otwell. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Leslie Robbins and sister, Winnie Evalene Robbins. Funeral Information Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 P.M. Wednesday, September 5th from the Elmwood Chapel of Day & Carter Mortuary with Rev. Bob Dailey officiating. Burial will follow in the Green Hill Cemetery where military rites will be accorded by members of the American Legion Gillen Post #33.
