Obituary of Norma J. Day Brodhecker Maxwell

Bedford Norma J. Day Brodhecker Maxwell, 85, of Bedford, IN, entered eternal life to be with her Lord at 3:50 am on Monday, October 19, 2009 at her residence. It was Mothers dying request to be home with her family and to go on to heaven. She wanted the Lords will to be done. Mrs. Maxwell was born in Lawrence Co. at the Boone Holler home on February 29, 1924 to James A. and Sarah M. (Craig) Day. She was the youngest of her siblings and wouldnt let you forget that she was the baby. She was of non-denominational Protestant faith and belonged to Gods church. She loved the Lord and instilled that legacy in her children to pass on for generations. She graduated high school from Fayetteville in 1942 and went on to be a wonderful and loving wife, homemaker, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She loved to work with flowers, to dance and was very patriotic. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Gillen Post #33 American Legion and V.F.W. Post #1686. After high school, she moved to Indianapolis to work at the Tee Pee Restaurant where she met our father. She married Curtis G. Brodhecker on January 2, 1943. She and Daddy moved to Davenport, Iowa and Denver, Colorado before returning to Lawrence Co., IN. In 1961 they moved to Columbus, IN and resided there until 1969. Upon the death of her husband, she returned to Lawrence Co., where she lived out her life. She had four daughters. She loved to sing gospel songs with us and she had some silly songs, too. After the chores were done, we liked to walk or ride the sled in the snow from Boone Holler to Silverville, go on hay rides, picnics and swim in the Blue Hole. After Daddy passed away in 1967, she married Doyle Hickory Maxwell in 1974. She and Hickory loved to travel. They traveled to the 48 contiguous states never making it to Alaska or Hawaii. Mother had a spoon collection from each one. She will be sadly missed by her daughters, Sondra Gilley and husband, Roger of Columbus, IN, Ellen Moutardier and husband, Rick of Bedford, Rebecca Nikirk and husband, Reggie of Bedford, Susan Brodhecker of Bedford; four step-children, Greg, Barry, Connie and Bonnie Maxwell all originally of Indianapolis, IN; ten grandchildren, Jeanne Anne Hopkins and husband, Brian, Deborah Marling and husband, Damon, Stephen Gilley and wife, Jenny, Ryan Moutardier and wife, Marci, Curtis Moutardier and wife, Trisha, Kent Moutardier and wife, Kara, Eric Nikirk and wife, Julie, Scott Nikirk and wife, Jamie, Nathan Nikirk and wife, Amy and Jennifer Nikirk; sixteen great grandchildren, Jordan and Brandon Hopkins, Caleb, Megan and Tanner Marling, Cole, Cadence and Chloe Gilley, Abigail, Jack and Vincent Moutardier, Andrew, Brittney, Kaden, Allison and Elijah Nikirk; several nieces and nephews, also by a close cousin and friend, Miriam Wagoner. She was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, siblings, Earl Day, Blanche Short, Paul Day, Isabelle Akers, Rose Anne Chastain, Sarah Copeland and Marian Spray. Funeral Information Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 am on Friday, October 23rd from the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with Pastors Damon Marling and Terry Bryant officiating and special music by Sondra Gilley. A graveside committal will be conducted at 1:00 pm at the Fairview Cemetery in Brownstown, IN with grandsons and great grandsons serving as pallbearers and granddaughters and great granddaughters serving as flower bearers. Friends may call from 2:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Thursday, October 22nd at the Day & Carter Mortuary. Donations Information The family asks that friends consider memorial contributions be made to Hospice of Bloomington Hospital.
