Bedford – Susan Elaine (Smith) Sowders, 73, of Bedford, passed away at 5:00 am on Wednesday, February 19, 2025, at Bloomington Hospital, with family by her side.

Born August 16, 1951, in Monroe Co., she was the daughter of Delbert and Zalaya (Kinser) Smith. She married Charles R. Sowders on September 19, 1970, and he preceded her in death in 2010. She retired from Visteon of Bedford. She was baptized at Gulletts Creek Baptist Church on April 28, 2010. She loved spending time with her children, grandchildren (who called her Mal), family and friends.

Survivors include two children, Kelly Sowders, and Doug Sowders, both of Bedford; two grandchildren, BreOnna Charles and Wyatt Sowders, both of Bedford; two sisters, Pat Eads and husband, Ralph, of Heltonville, Trish Smith and husband, Russell “Cut”; a brother, Kevin Smith, all of Bedford. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, “Chuck”; four brothers, Fred, Don, Pete, and Steve; three sisters, Linda and Gloria Smith, and Bonnie Sykes.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 pm on Tuesday, February 25th in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with Keith Wisley officiating. Burial will follow in the Chapel Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10:00 am until 1:00 pm on Tuesday at the Day & Carter Mortuary. Family and friends may express condolences at www.daycarter.com.
