Obituary of George Thomas Kirkman

Grand Rapids, MI – George Thomas Kirkman, 85, of Grand Rapids, MI, passed away at 1:10 am on Monday, April 4, 2022, at the Oakes at Byron Center - Hospice Care. Born April 2, 1937, in Oolitic, IN, he was the son of Elery and Maudie May Kirkman. He married Sarah Elizabeth Kirkman at the Presbyterian Church in Bedford on September 26, 1970. He received a Master’s degree in Education from Indiana University in Bloomington. He was a teacher and coach at Oolitic High School, Oolitic Junior High, and Lincoln Elementary School in Bedford. Survivors include a daughter, Heather Noelle Kirkman and son-in-law, Arthur Hurst, III, of Goshen, KY; a son, Jonathan Scott Kirkman and daughter-in-law, Lisa Marie Kirkman, of Ada, MI; grandchildren, Brandon Thomas, Collin Joseph Kirkman, and Julia Elizabeth Kirkman. A memorial service will be conducted at 4:00 pm on Saturday, April 9th in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with Bro. Marty Speer officiating. Visitation will be from 3:00 pm until the hour of service on Saturday at the mortuary. A celebration of life dinner will be at the Milwaukee Depot on Saturday at 6:00 pm.
