Obituary of Emmett L. Lewis

Bloomington Emmett L. Lewis, 89, a resident of the Hospitality House in Bloomington, IN, formerly of Lawrence County, IN, died at 7:05 am on Wednesday, June 11, 2003 at the Hospitality House in Bloomington. Born March 6, 1914 in Avoca, IN, he was the son of Jot Lewis and Stella (Massey) Lewis Baker. He married Phyllis Hawkins in 1935 and she died in 1996. He was a former member of the State Legislature serving in the House of Representatives, a former director of the Indiana Department of Fish and Game and former Superintendent of Spring Mill State Park. He was a square dance caller in the area for twenty-five years and a member of the First Baptist Church in Bedford. Survivors include one son, Phil Lewis and his wife, Donna, of Bloomington; four granddaughters, Gina Myers and her husband, Bruce, Amy Robinson and her husband, Ryan, Shelly Wright, Karen Shiflet and her husband, Bill all of Bloomington; nine great grandchildren; five great great grandchildren; one sister, Mary Scheffel and her husband, Fred of Bedford and one brother, Bill D. Baker and his wife, Roberta of Bedford; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, three+ brothers and one granddaughter. Funeral Information Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 am on Saturday, June 14th at Cresthaven Memory Gardens with Rev. Bob Kirkman officiating. Burial will follow. Friends may call from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Friday, June 13th at the Day & Carter Mortuary.
