Obituary of Harvey Holmes

Avoca – Harvey (Cocky) Holmes, 90, of Avoca, died Wednesday, January 27, 2016 at I.U. Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. Born September 15, 1925, in Bedford, he was the son of Harvey G. and Ada (Turner) Holmes. He married Marian Blackburn on September 18, 1946 and she preceded him in death. He was an installer and repairman for Indiana Bell for twenty-two years. He later worked for North Lawrence Community School Corporation. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and a member of the Crossroads Community Church. He was a member of Gillen Post #33 American Legion where he had served as past commander and also a member of the Elks Lodge and V.F.W. Post #1686 of Oolitic. He was a former County Commissioner and Marshall Township Trustee. Survivors include two sons, J.R. Holmes and wife, Martha, of Bloomington and Mike Holmes and wife, Jeanne, of Avoca; two daughters, Debby Ransom and husband, Ken, of Springville and Jan Kirk and husband, Jim, of Avoca; seven grandchildren, Jonathan Holmes, Meredith Johnson, Kimberly Hawk, Jennifer Pemberton, Barry Ransom, Missy Simpson and Jessica Dixon; seventeen great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, a brother, Bill Holmes and a sister, Sue Byers. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 am on Tuesday, February 2nd at Crossroads Community Church with Pastor Ken Ransom officiating. Burial will follow in Cresthaven Memory Gardens where military rites will be accorded by members of Gillen Post #33 American Legion. Visitation will be from 2:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Monday, February 1st and from 10:00 am until the hour of service on Tuesday, February 2nd at Crossroads Community Church.
